Our standards
Editorial policy
We cite named sources for the facts we publish, with the date we checked them. We publish no average prices, rankings, reviews or invented people, and no one can pay to change a page. This policy covers what we publish, what we refuse, how we expect to be paid and how we fix mistakes.
Who this binds. Every page on HyreYard, written by the HyreYard Research Desk. HyreYard is not a landscaping company (who runs HyreYard). It plants, builds and applies nothing, and no company has paid for anything here.
Where do the facts come from?
Primary sources first: model codes such as the International Residential Code, city and county ordinances, state statutes and licensing boards, water-district rebate and watering rules, the USDA NRCS Web Soil Survey, EPA WaterSense, and the label on a lawn product.
Time-sensitive claims carry the date we last checked them. The source is linked on the page, not kept in a file somewhere. Where a rule is adopted locally, we quote the model text and tell you to confirm it with the office that enforces it.
What will we not publish?
- Fake averages. A national landscaping price presented as if it were your price.
- Unsupported listings. Company listings, ratings or reviews we cannot support from primary sources.
- Unproven claims. Testimonials, case studies, statistics, certifications or awards we cannot evidence.
- Product prescriptions. Which pesticide or fertilizer to use, or how much. The label on the product is the law.
- A site diagnosis. No page or tool can say why your yard floods or your wall leans. That takes someone standing in the yard.
- Pages written to rank. Pages built around a phrase instead of a question someone actually has.
What happens when we do not know?
The page says so. That is why this site has no company directory today. The research behind one is still being built, and an honest empty space is worth more than a full list we cannot defend.
The research studies name the data they rest on and the date it was retrieved.
How do we expect to make money?
HyreYard expects to earn money by connecting homeowners with landscaping companies. That is not live yet, as how HyreYard works explains. When it is, it will be disclosed wherever it applies, and it will not decide what the guidance says.
Nobody can buy a placement, a ranking or a favorable description on this site. How landscaping companies will be checked explains why we never call a company trusted or approved.
How do we correct mistakes?
Tell us using the contact details below. We fix errors in place, change the review date, and note the correction where it changes the substance of what we said.
Which general sources do the guides cite?
- Plant Hardiness Zone Map, USDA Agricultural Research Service
- Cooperative Extension System: regional lawn and garden guidance, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture
- WaterSense: outdoor water use and irrigation efficiency, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
- Web Soil Survey: soil properties by location, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
- Nonpoint Source: Urban Areas: paved surfaces and stormwater runoff, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
- Tree care and pruning guidance for homeowners, International Society of Arboriculture
